Waited 54 years for land deed; now CPM panchayat moves to raze her home

  • November 24 , 2025

A 90-year-old fish seller in Kasaragod fought the sea all her life — now she is fighting the state. Paru has lived on a five-cent plot since 1971. She raised four daughters alone, sold fish to survive, built her house rupee by rupee — and now a demolition order sits on her door.

The CPM-led Udma panchayat served the notice verbally citing CRZ violation — but the demolition order does not mention CRZ at all. Instead, it uses a section of the Panchayat Raj Act that also allows regularisation. Why was CRZ provision ignored?

Why is Paru the only house targeted in a settlement full of coastal homes? Why was even her drinking water connection blocked? And why has the government not given her a title deed despite 54 years of occupation? This is the story of systemic apathy, political pressure, and a hostile neighbour — and a grandmother who refuses to give up.
