Four self-financing medical colleges to levy annual fee of just Rs 7.65 lakh

Four self-financing medical colleges propose to levy annual fee of Rs 7.65 lakh

Thiruvananthapuram: Four self-financing medical colleges run by Christian managements in Kerala have decided to levy Rs 7.65 lakh as annual MBBS course fee for general category students. Meanwhile, two Palakkad-based medical colleges have decided to slightly reduce the fee. The Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE) has already notified the fee structure proposed by 18 self-financing medical colleges, including these six.

The authorities of the above-said four medical colleges said that they have capped the highest rate of annual fee at Rs 7.65 lakh in view of the overall financial hardships triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, they hope the move may avoid delay in wrapping up the admission procedures.

These four institutions are: Thrissur Jubilee, Thrissur Amala, Thiruvalla Pushpagiri, and Kolenchery Orthodox Church medical colleges. The fee sought for the NRI category by these four colleges is Rs 22 lakh.

Rs 7.65 lakh was the figure arrived by the Justice R Rajendra Babu Committee. It had initially recommended the annual fee to be in the range of Rs 6.22 lakh to Rs 7.65 lakh for various medical colleges this year. As per the latest CEE notification after a High Court order, the annual MBBS fee for merit seat is Rs 11-22 lakh and Rs 20-30 lakh for an NRI seat. This is almost three times the amount recommended by the Justice R Rajendra Babu Committee.

Meanwhile, P K Das and Karuna Medical College, both in Palakkad, on Wednesday notified a fee structure, which is less than the amount they had proposed earlier. P K Das had earlier sought Rs 22 lakh and Karuna Rs 19.5 lakh. Both colleges have now revised the annual fee to be Rs 16 lakh.

As reported earlier, with the change in the fee structure, the students were given time to rearrange their options till 12 noon on Thursday.
