New Delhi: The University Grants Commission has been mulling the merging of the Joint Entrance Exam – Main and the National Entrance cum Eligibility Exam – UG with the recently introduced Common University Entrance Test – UG for quite some time now. UGC Chairman Jagadesh Kumar said that an expert committee would soon be appointed to study the proposal.

Instead of writing separate entrance tests for Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, the proposal suggests to make these exams a part of CUET. It is assumed to ease the workload of students and reduce the delay in conducting so many entrance exams.

This year, around 43 lakh students had applied for CUET, JEE – Main and NEET exams. In JEE – Main, the applicants have to attend Maths, Physics and Chemistry sections. However, in NEET, Biology replaces Maths.

All these subjects are there in CUET too. The latest proposal aims to prepare separate rank lists for these subjects and then conduct admission for engineering and medical courses. Meanwhile, the authorities noted that only initial discussions have been conducted in this matter.
