New Delhi: A major overhaul of the top national entrance examinations for professional courses is on the cards.

An expert committee would be appointed by the end of this month to study about the feasibility of merging national level engineering and medical entrance exams like the Joint Entrance Examination and the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test with the Common University Admission Test – Undergraduate, stated University Grants Commission Chairman Jagadesh Kumar.

The UGC won't rush through the merger as it anticipates hiccups on the way as a drastic reform is being considered. A detailed study and preparation will be undertaken before deciding on the integration.

The technical glitches that happened during the CUET– UG exams this year would be rectified and the exams would be conducted twice a year, the Chairman said.

The proposed modifications are based on the National Education Policy, 2020, which envisages a single entrance exam instead of multiple ones. However, when the various exams are merged, a consensus have to be reached about the syllabus and the difficulty level of the exams.

The proposed integrated exam will be computer-based. The JEE is already an online computer-based test. However, NEET is still conducted in the traditional way, using pen and paper.
