As Computer Engineering is a vast and diverse field, those choosing to study in this field with the right aptitude would never be disappointed. Along with a high salary and status, there is also the opportunity to work satisfactorily and have good living conditions. Another notable factor is job security. By keeping up with the latest trends, adapting to the changes and resolving the challenges, Computer Engineering professionals would be able to forge ahead.

High salary

Computer Engineering and Information Technology are the two job sectors that offer high salaries in the present times. As per the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, employees in these two sectors earn twice than the national average. Jobs such as web development and computer support technicians do not require a degree but can get high salaries.

Degree-holders working as network architect, programmer, system analyst, software developer, and hardware engineer get only average salary.

Post-graduates in Computer Engineering can get relatively high salaries. The same is the case for Technology Research Analysts with post-graduation.

Job security

The Computer Engineering sector has more job security than any other field. Experts, who have done research in the field, have pointed out that the demand for such employees would only increase in the next 20 years.

In the US, all other job sectors are growing at 5 per cent, but the growth of the software developer’s job is 24 per cent. The growth of the information security analysts is 28 per cent. But not all computer engineering jobs grow at the same rate. The growth in sectors such as computer hardware engineering and network architect is only 5 per cent.

Work wherever you want

Computer engineers can choose to work in any part of the world. Those who like the US lifestyle mostly pick Silicon Valley as their first choice. Most countries have locations in major cities where computer engineers can work, similar to Silicon Valley. Companies that manufacture electrical cars and their parts are always in need of computer engineers. Any firm with a computer network needs employees who have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer engineering.

If you are a person who loves to travel, you can try to secure a job as a computer consultant. Only that you need to have extensive knowledge about information security. They are responsible for protecting the data of the organisation from cyber attacks. As a computer consultant you can take up the project of one company after completing the project at another. Thus enabling you to work with various companies in different locations and situations around the world.

Keeping pace with change

As computer-based operations are constantly changing, those working in this sector are always dealing with the latest issues. But they need to ensure that the skills they have acquired are not outdated and that they are aware of the latest updates. A person working as a security analyst might have learned about preventing cyber attacks five years ago.

But that person cannot prevent a cyber attack five years later, using the knowledge acquired earlier. People working in the field should keep track of all the changes in the software and hardware sectors. Only those who can adapt to such changes can survive in the jobs in the sector.

But not for everyone

Like any other good profession, the jobs in the Computer Engineering sector are not suitable for everyone. Only those who like to keep learning will be able to enjoy working in this sector. Skills and knowledge should be constantly updated. There would be situations where the employee will have to work continuously for hours without any breaks to resolve certain issues. But those who can overcome these challenges, will have the opportunity to work for a high salary and with job security for years.
