Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala’s General Education Department has ordered all schools in the state where female students are enrolled to compulsorily set up napkin vending machines with the support of local bodies.

These schools should also arrange facilities to dispose of the used napkins, according to the order.

The department also said that all schools have to install scientific waste management facilities. Schools should process biodegradable waste on their own and use it as manure for farming and gardening on the premises.

Bins have to be placed in all classrooms to collect non-biodegradable waste, the order said. Another directive is to organise school programmes that avoid plastic materials.
