New Delhi: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a notification, proposing to conduct a common counselling for admission to medical graduate courses across the country.

The common counselling would be held for all the seats, as per the notification. The state governments had earlier opposed this directive. The latest proposal is applicable to the seats in government and private medical colleges. But the NMC has not specified when this would be implemented.

The NMC pointed out that the common counselling would help reduce the stress caused among students due to multiple admission processes held at various places. However, the NMC authorities said that this would be implemented only after an agreement is reached between the Centre and the states.

Currently, 15 per cent of the seats at government colleges are in the All-India Quota. In the remaining 85 per cent of the seats, the state governments conduct the admission. In private colleges, the 100 per cent admission is carried out at the state level.
