Meet Sidharth Ramkumar, Malayali who left IPS to secure 4th rank in Civil Services Exam

Kochi: Another Malayali has brought honour to Kerala with an outstanding achievement in the Civil Services Examination 2023. Hailing from Kochi, Sidharth Ramkumar clinched the fourth rank in the UPSC examination on Tuesday in his fourth attempt. Sidharth had previously secured a place in the Indian Police Service (IPS) on two occasions.

"I had no idea that Sidharth was attempting the exam," Sidharth's mother Rathi told Manorama News following the announcement of the results. A native of Pallimukku in Kochi, Sidharth is currently undergoing training at IPS Academy in Hyderabad.

Sidharth did his schooling, from kindergarten to Plus-Two, at Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Vaduthala. After that, he earned his Bachelor’s in Architecture from the College of Architecture, Thiruvananthapuram.

He made his maiden attempt at civil services exams after college, though unsuccessfully. In 2022, he cleared the exams and got selected for the Indian Post & Telecommunication Accounts and Financial Services. After that, he cracked the exams again with 121st rank and got selected for IPS in the West Bengal cadre.

“Sidharth was always good at studies and he used to be among the top five in school,” his father T M Ramkumar who retired as the principal of Chinmaya College of Arts, Commerce and Science in Tripunithura said.

Sidharth’s mother, who is a homemaker, said her son is a cricket enthusiast. He was the captain of the school team. She said getting into the IAS was a dream of Sidharth.

Sidharth’s brother Adarsh Kumar, a lawyer at the Kerala High Court, said his brother is an extrovert and a film buff. “When he is home, he makes sure that he watches all the new releases,” said Adarsh. 

The Union Public Service Commission declared the final results of the Civil Services Examinations 2023 on Tuesday, with Aditya Srivastava securing the top position, followed by Animesh Pradhan and Donuru Ananya Reddy in second and third place, respectively. Alongside Sidharth, several other Malayalis have also achieved top ranks in the CSE: Vishnu Sasikumar (31), PP Archana (40), R Remya (45), Binjo P Jose (59), Fabi Rasheed (71), and Annie George (93).
