Mundakkayam: From her childhood, Sonnet Jose (24) had only one answer for who she wants to become later in life – a Collector. When the Civil Services Examinations were declared on Tuesday, Jose’s childhood dream came true- she secured the 54th rank in her second attempt.

Speaking to Onmanorama, Jose, a native of Mundakkayam in Kottayam, said that she never expected to see such a high rank against her name. “In my first attempt, I missed out on the list because I did not do well in the interview round. This time around, I just wanted to see my name on the list,” she said with a laugh.

The interview round was the most daunting task for her in her second attempt as well. She said, “I struggled with my fear to face the interview panel. I was also not confident of my English proficiency.”

“More than happiness, I felt a sense of relief wash over me because I am finally done with all the examinations,” she added.

Her family consists of her parents, Jose and Marykutty, who are engaged in subsistence agriculture, and her brother and sister. “The UPSC is not a solitary journey. Your family also goes through the stress and witnesses your lows. They are happy that their efforts have paid off,” she said.

Jose said that her one-year training is expected to begin in July or August. “Wherever I am posted, I hope I perform well and my work benefits the people,” she said.
