A few days ago, bird flu was confirmed in Alappuzha's Muhamma, and authorities have initiated containment measures. More than 5,000 birds will be culled in the district starting tomorrow morning. The flu was also detected in Olavanna, Kakkodi, Perumanna, and Nallalam, Kozhikode. In total, around 20,000 birds will be culled to contain the flu. Meanwhile, the district animal husbandry department has stated that it is safe to consume perfectly cooked meat and eggs of chicken, duck and quail.
How to cook, dishes to avoid
The virus in the meat would be destroyed when it is cooked at 70 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the avian flu virus is destroyed when meat or eggs are cooked for 3-5 minutes. However, it is safer to avoid consuming raw eggs, half-cooked dishes like bull’s-eye or semi-cooked meat. The Food and Safety Standards of India (FSSAI) also asks to wash and disinfect all surfaces and utensils that have been in contact with raw meat, clean and sanitise cutting boards and knives, and properly dispose of all waste.
Steps to avoid spread
The department has advised caution when handling dead chickens or birds or when butchering poultry, as the mutated virus could spread to humans under certain circumstances. Wearing gloves, visors and following personal hygiene would prevent such infections. Those in close contact with infected avians, such as butchers, cooks, and veterinary doctors and employees, should take proper precautions to prevent infection. Meanwhile, the department has opened a control room to respond to the public's queries and doubts. Phone – 0495 2762050.
