Nature's juicy treasure trove, watermelon, enjoys major fandom in summer due to its juicy, watery goodness. The fibre, potassium, minerals and vitamins in it are excellent for handling India's hot days and even boost immunity. However, did you know the fruit's benefits are not just limited to its red or pink flesh, but also its white-coloured rind? It may not be as sweet as the plump flesh, but it is rich in citrulline and is made into yummy dishes in many parts of the world. For instance, watermelon rind pickles are quite popular in various Southern US states, Asia and Europe. Chutneys are also made out of it in Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and India. Rind jams, gazpacho drinks, smoothies, salads and curries are also popular in various parts of the world. If you still wonder why it should be part of your diet, here are a few of its benefits you should know:

1) Weight management
Citrulline, the amino acid in the rind can help improve metabolism. It also aids the formation of proteins and molecules like nitric oxide, ornithine, polyamines, agmatine, proline, glutamate, creatine, dimethyl, arginine and urea. You can thinly slice or dice the rind after cleaning it thoroughly, and combine it with other fruits, veggies and dressing to prepare a snack that would help you the best with weight management. The rind also contains vitamins C and A, potassium, magnesium, some antioxidants and minerals. The fibre in it improves digestion and controls the blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Besides citrulline, watermelon rind has chlorophyll, lycopene, flavonoid and phenolic components.

2) Cardiovascular health
Citrulline also promotes healthy blood pressure and blood flow. The potassium in it is also important for heart health. It will also help enhance your exercise performance, reduce your arterial stiffness and help neutralize harmful free radicals.
3) Skincare benefits
If you have skin issues like sunburn or acne, the rind can help soothe the skin and hydrate it. You can create a facemask by grinding the rind into a smooth paste, make a natural toner by boiling chopped watermelon rind in water and use the rind to also create a gentle exfoliating scrub.

Precautions
Make sure you wash the rind well before eating or using it, removing pesticides and contaminants. Also, test whether you have any digestive discomfort while consuming it, as some people can be sensitive to it. Consume small amounts of the fruit's portion first to check how your body responds.
