Ambalappuzha: A study has shown that COVID-19 survivors are increasingly becoming diabetic. Apparently, 28 per cent of people who had tested positive for COVID-19 and then recovered got diabetes within two years. The study was conducted a team of expert doctors including Dr Chinta Sujatha, head of medicine at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, Dr Khalid Khader, COVID medicine specialist at the Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi and Dr Shibu Sukumaran, assistant surgeon at the health department.

The study
Blood samples from 2,402 COVID-19 survivors under the age of 30 in Thakazhi panchayat, Alappuzha, were collected and tested in 2023 for the study. From this study, it was clear that one in five persons from families that have a family history of diabetes and one in ten from families that do not have a family history of diabetes were diagnosed with diabetes. Meanwhile, the medical team will conduct its second phase of investigation in Thakazhi next year. COVID-19 survivors should do diabetes tests every six months to check whether they need any medical intervention.
