MBBS admission | Extend application time before third allotment: HC

Kochi: The High Court has asked the government to consider extending the time before the third allotment to those who could not apply for the MBBS-NRI quota in the given time limit.

The court also said that those whose application under the NRI quota was earlier rejected due to non-submission of the required documents could also avail this opportunity. This window may also be used to correct errors in applications that have been pointed out by the authorities.

A bench of justices AM Shafiq and P Gopinath directed the commissioner of entrance examinations to give wide publicity to this order.

The High Court cited a Supreme Court order, which had said that a portion of the proceeds from NRI fees should be utilised to provide fee assistance to the weaker sections. In such a situation, all the seats under the NRI quota must be filled, the court said.

The high court was hearing a petition from Jerin Thomas Panicker, a native of Ezhukon in Kollam who had applied for the MBBS course under the NRI quota. The petitioner said the required documents could not be produced within the time limit because of the restrictions resulting from the COVID pandemic. The petition also pointed out that more than half of the seats under the NRI quota were vacant as a majority of the candidates could not submit their documents in time.

Applications for NRI seats in self-financing medical colleges from today

Those who have been included in the medical rank list published by the commissioner of entrance examinations can apply anew from today till 10 am on December 14 to be considered for the NRI seats that have remained vacant after the second phase of allotment of MBBS-BDS courses in self-financing medical and dental colleges.

Students who have already applied for admission to NRI quota seats but have not been included in the category list due to shortcomings in the application can also upload the required documents to rectify the deficiency from today till December 14.

Those seeking medical admission in NRI quota seats are required to upload the eligibility documents as mentioned in the government order dated February 22, within the stipulated time.

Non-Kerala second category candidates can also upload the required documents to prove their eligibility for the NRI seats by the date mentioned above.
