Karur (Tamil Nadu): The bodies of 38 individuals who lost their lives in the stampede at the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally on September 27 have been identified, and authorities are in the process of handing them over to their families, Dindigul district collector S Saravanan stated on Sunday.

He added that the identity of one woman is yet to be confirmed. “Currently, the work to identify this woman was on and once it was done, we would follow the due procedure of conducting a post-mortem and hand over the body to her relatives,” he said.

So far, 14 bodies have been returned to their families, Saravanan informed reporters. Director of Medical Education Dr Suganthi Rajakumari said two patients admitted on September 27 remain in critical condition and that every effort is being made to save them.

Answering questions from reporters, she confirmed that all government facilities have sufficient oxygen and medicines and that patients are receiving the best possible care. “Totally, we received 39 bodies at the GH and post-mortem was performed on 31 persons. Two people are in a critical condition,” Rajakumari said.
