COVID-19: 4,801 cases in Kerala on Wednesday, TPR rises to 6.75%

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala recorded 4,801 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday after testing 71,098 samples, taking its Test Positivity Rate (TPR) to 6.75 per cent.

After 1,813 more recover from the infection, the number active patients in the state reached 22,910. Among them, only 9 per cent are admitted to hospitals currently.

The active cases had dropped below 20,000 on December 30, 2021 after more than a year. However, with the Omicron variant spreading rapidly, cases have been increasing and the active cases again crossed the 20K-mark on Tuesday.

COVID fatalities reached 48,895, after 229 previously undocumented deaths and 29 recent ones were added to the list, Health Minister Veena George said in a press release.

The state has reported 52,63,415 cases so far. Of them, 51,90,913 recovered.

Of the positive cases, 36 were health workers, while 76 had come from outside the state and 4,458 infected through contact. The source of infection of 231 among them is unknown.

Vaccination and quarantine
Till Friday, 98.6 per cent (2,64,00,210) of the eligible adult population in Kerala has been given one dose of COVID-19 vaccine while 80 per cent (2,13,76,794) received both the doses.

As of now, a total of 1,04,353 people are under observation across the state. Of them, 1,02,007 are under home or institutional quarantine while 2,346 are in hospitals across the state. A total of 225 people were admitted in hospitals on Wednesday.

There are 6 wards in 5 local bodies across Kerala where the Weekly Infection Population Ratio (WIPR) is above 10 per cent. Strict Covid restrictions are being implemented in these regions.
