COVID-19: 18,123 cases in Kerala on Sunday, TPR rises above 30%

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala recorded 18,123 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday after testing 59,314 samples, taking its Test Positivity Rate (TPR) to 30.55 per cent.

COVID fatalities reached 50,832, after 150 previously undocumented deaths and 8 recent ones were added to the list, Health Minister Veena George said in a press release.

The active cases which were below the one lakh-mark from October 12, 2021 onwards, breached that level on Sunday as a third wave of infections started spreading rapidly in the state. After 4,749 more recover from the infection, the number of active patients in the state reached 1,03,864. Among them, only four per cent are admitted to hospitals currently.

The state has reported 53,78,831‬ cases so far. Of them, 52,23,430 recovered.

Of the positive cases, 149 were health workers, while 113 had come from outside the state and 17,627 infected through contact. The source of infection of 234 among them is unknown.

Vaccination and quarantine
Till Friday, 99.69 per cent (2,66,25,939) of the eligible adult population in Kerala has been given one dose of COVID-19 vaccine while 82 per cent (2,19,76,976) received both the doses.

As of now, a total of 2,17,670 people are under observation across the state. Of them, 2,13,251 are under home or institutional quarantine while 4,419 are in hospitals across the state. A total of 528 people were admitted in hospitals on Sunday.

There are 6 wards in 5 local bodies across Kerala where the Weekly Infection Population Ratio (WIPR) is above 10 per cent. Strict Covid restrictions are being implemented in these regions.
