Kannur: A tiger that terrorised the village of Kelakam in the Kannur district for a week died less than six hours after it was tranquilised by the Forest Department.
The Kannur DFO said the tiger was anaemic and had sustained injuries on the face and chest. A team of veterinary doctors conducted a health check soon after it was trapped in a cage by the Forest Department, said the DFO.
"The tiger was a 2.5-year-old male. We had temporarily shifted the animal to the forest range office to provide primary healthcare," said a Forest officer.
The tiger had been roaming Kelakam and nearby regions for about a week and had killed a dog. It was tranquilised by a team of Forest Department around 3 pm on Thursday.
The postmortem of the tiger will be conducted on Friday as per the instructions given by the National Tiger Conservation Authority, the Forest officer said.
Residents had shot videos of the tiger roaming freely in rubber plantations. The tiger was first spotted at Rawuthar Colony by a villager last Friday.
