A video captured on the mobile phone of a 24-year-old woman who jumped off a building to ward off a rape attempt in Kozhikode surfaced on Tuesday in which the woman is heard wailing and pleading not to hurt her. The woman was playing a game on her phone when the incident happened. "Please don't hurt me," the woman pleads with a man in the video clip. The brief video shows the woman screaming for help and the man trying to calm her down.
She was severely hurt after jumping off the first floor of her house in an attempt to escape an alleged rape attempt on Saturday. The woman, a native of Payyanur in Kannur, was employed as a receptionist at the newly opened hotel, ‘Sanketham’ in Mampetta, near Mukkam.
The woman's family released the video, which was accidentally recorded on her phone. She has been admitted to the intensive care unit of the Ortho department in the Government Medical College Hospital. Though the police recorded her statement thrice, no arrest has been made yet, a close relative of the woman said.
The hotel owner, along with two other staff members, allegedly barged into her place of accommodation and attempted to rape her. She was assaulted, and she jumped off the first floor of her accommodation and sustained serious injuries to her hip, spine and hands. Mukkam police have filed a case against hotel owner Devadas, staff member Riyas, and security personnel Suresh. They have been charged under sections 329(4) (house-trespass), 74 (use of criminal force or assault against a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty) and 3(5) (joint criminal liability) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The accused are currently on the run.
Later on Tuesday, the Kerala Women’s Commission directed Kozhikode Rural SP K E Baiju to submit an immediate report on the incident.
