Pappinisseri: "Sir, commuters are not circus artists to leap over potholes on the overbridge!" This is the growing outcry from frustrated residents and daily commuters who depend on the Pappinisseri railway overbridge — a key transport link now turning into a safety hazard.

The expansion joint of the overbridge, which connects the concrete slabs, has severely deteriorated. A significant fissure has formed after the concrete gave way, leaving a gaping pothole that exposes the structure beneath. Iron rods now jut dangerously from multiple points on the bridge surface, increasing the risk of accidents.

Frequent mishaps have already been reported. When heavy vehicles cross the bridge, loud noises and visible shaking have become the norm, adding to public concern. Despite the deteriorating conditions, authorities have yet to take meaningful action.

On the 20th of last month, an expert team led by Kerala State Transport Project (KSTP) Director M Anjana inspected both the Pappinisseri and Thaavam railway overbridges. The team acknowledged the alarming state of the structures and assured immediate emergency repair work. However, nearly three weeks later, no steps have been taken, and the bridge’s condition has only worsened.

A report by the Kerala Highway Research Institute, detailing the recurring causes of damage, has also not been acted upon. This bureaucratic delay has deepened public frustration and increased fears of a potential disaster if urgent repairs are not initiated.

Over a month and a half ago, authorities had attempted to address the issue using micro-concreting during a temporary closure of the bridge. However, the patchwork solution has proven largely ineffective, and the structural issues persist.
Residents and commuters are now urging immediate intervention, stressing that delay in action could lead to catastrophic consequences.
