Thiruvananthapuram: A BJP worker in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation’s Thrikkannapuram ward died by suicide on Saturday. The deceased has been identified as Anand K Thampi, a native of Jai Nagar, Thirumala. Anand was being considered as a potential BJP candidate for the ward.
Initial information suggests he took the extreme step after being disappointed over not being allotted the seat. Anand reportedly sent a suicide note to media outlets via WhatsApp before ending his life.
Anand had planned to contest as an independent candidate after failing to secure the BJP ticket. Party sources unofficially confirmed that his name was not included in the final candidate list. The BJP’s current candidate in Thrikkannapuram is V Vinod Kumar.
In his suicide message, Anand levelled serious allegations against BJP and RSS leaders. He claimed that BJP leaders were responsible for denying him the candidature and alleged that both BJP and RSS leaders had links with the “land mafia”. Anand further accused the party of fielding a candidate aligned with the land mafia in Thrikkannapuram.
“This is deeply disturbing. I have spoken to the district president, who informed me that his (Anand’s) name was not in the list submitted at the ward level. We will investigate this further,” BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar said.
"Anand was not part of the candidature discussions at any stage. He was associated with the RSS years ago, but he is not active in the BJP now,” said BJP district president Karamana Jayan.
Meanwhile, Minister V Sivankutty said the government would do everything within its powers to investigate the incident and ensure justice.
