Alappuzha: A severed human leg—from the knee to the toes—was discovered on a railway track at the Alappuzha railway station on Tuesday. The body part was spotted at track No. 2, near Platform 2, around 10.45 am, shortly after the Ernakulam–Alappuzha MEMU train that had arrived in the morning was moved after passengers deboarded.

An official from the Alappuzha railway police told Onmanorama that multiple possibilities are being examined. “One possibility is that the leg belongs to someone who may have died by jumping in front of a train, and this train could have dragged the body part along the route. Another angle is that a passenger sitting on the footboard might have had their leg accidentally severed if it got trapped beneath the train,” the official said.

"Railway stations and officials along the Ernakulam–Alappuzha stretch have been alerted," he added.

Inquest procedures are underway, after which the body part will be sent for autopsy. A case of unnatural death has been registered under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). An investigation is in progress.
