Candidates were elected unopposed in 16 wards across Kasaragod and Kannur in the local body polls, according to the State Election Commission.
In Kannur, five wards of Anthoor Municipality — Morazha, Kodallur, Thaliyil, Podikkund and Anchampeedika — saw uncontested victories. Candidates were also elected unopposed in six wards of Kannapuram grama panchayat and three wards of Malappattam grama panchayat.
In Kasaragod, one ward each in Mangalpady and Madikai grama panchayats reported unopposed results. While polling will be skipped in these grama panchayat wards, voting will continue at the respective booths for block and district panchayat seats.
Polling in the Paayimpadam ward of Moothedam grama panchayat in Malappuram district has been postponed due to the death of UDF candidate Haseena. Elections were also cancelled in the Onakkoor ward of Pampakuda grama panchayat (Ernakulam) and the Vizhinjam coastal ward of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation following the deaths of candidates. The State Election Commission will announce revised polling dates later.
Meanwhile, the first phase of the Kerala local body elections was held on Monday across seven districts — Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam — covering 11,168 wards in 595 local bodies. As of 6 pm, Alappuzha, Idukki and Ernakulam recorded over 70 per cent voter turnout, while Thiruvananthapuram reported the lowest at 65.93 per cent.
The second phase will take place on December 11 in the remaining districts, covering 12,408 wards across 604 local bodies. Counting for both phases will begin on December 13 at 8 am.
