Kottayam: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Lathika Subhash suffered a major setback in the Kottayam Municipality elections, finishing third in ward 48 (Thirunakkara).

Contesting on the LDF ticket, Lathika managed to secure only 113 votes. Congress candidate Susheela Gopakumar won the ward with 703 votes, while BJP candidate Nitya Rathessh finished second with 279 votes.

Meanwhile, the UDF has secured control of the Kottayam Municipality by winning 31 of the 53 seats. The LDF won 15 seats, while the NDA emerged victorious in six wards.

Lathika, former Mahila Congress chief, had quit the Congress in 2021 in protest against the party’s failure to allocate adequate seats to women candidates. Ahead of the Assembly polls that year, she tonsured her head in protest and contested as an independent from the Ettumanoor constituency.

In that election, she secured over 7,000 votes. V N Vasavan of CPM won from Ettumanoor with a margin of 14,303 votes, defeating UDF candidate Prince Luckose, who polled 43,986 votes.
