Idukki: The three-acre farm of Sibin Varghese of Koprath House at East Kalloorkkad in Thodupuzha stands out as a successful model of mixed farming. His principal crops include pepper, rubber, arecanut and nutmeg, along with a wide range of vegetables such as yam, colocasia, Chinese potato (koorka), sweet potato, and fruits including rambutan and dragon fruit. The farmland is located adjacent to his residence.

Apart from crop cultivation, Sibin rears cows and breeds multiple species of fish in a pond spread over three cents of land. His day begins at 6.30 am, and he personally oversees farm activities along with labourers until noon. His wife, Lintu, a homemaker, also lends a hand whenever possible.

The farm largely depends on organic manure produced at Sibin’s own biogas plant, supplemented with other natural fertilisers. He is now preparing to introduce coffee as an intercrop alongside arecanut and rubber. Sibin believes that scientific planning and timely farming practices are crucial for ensuring good returns.

His children- Alvina, Alwin and Mariette- actively support him in various aspects of farm management.
