Thrissur: An election flying squad intercepted the unauthorised distribution of household kits worth around ₹900 each during a raid in Thrissur on Saturday. A total of 26 kits were seized.
The operation, led by Executive Magistrate Dr Bindu T N, was carried out during a targeted inspection near Olari Parthasarathy Temple and Karthika Super Market. Officials said the kits, containing assorted household items, were being distributed in Sivaramapuram Colony.
Preliminary findings indicate that the distribution was carried out on the instructions of a person identified as Radhakrishnan. Authorities also suspect that around 75 kits had already been distributed before the squad intervened.
Officials said the act amounts to offences under Sections 170(1)(1) and 173 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 123(A)(1) of the Representation of the People Act, which deal with electoral bribery.
As the offences are non-cognisable, prior permission was obtained from the jurisdictional Magistrate to initiate legal proceedings. Thrissur West Police have registered a case and begun an investigation.
