The fourth T20I between India and South Africa was called off before toss due to excessive fog at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Wednesday. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in the city was measured above 400, which is marked as hazardous. (AQI upto 50 is considered good).
India lead the five-match series 2-1, having won in Dharamsala after the visitors levelled the series in New Chandigarh, following the opener in Cuttack, which the hosts won by a margin of 101 runs. The fifth match will be played at Ahmedabad on December 19.
Six inspections were carried out at regular intervals after the toss could not take place at the scheduled 6.30 pm.
Players were spotted wearing masks as they warmed up, hoping the fog would disappear. Had the match started around 9.50 pm, about three hours later, both sides would have got five overs to score. The crowd only left once the official announcement came.
Sanju Samson was expected to play, having missed the first three matches, in which Jitesh Sharma was used as the wicketkeeper batter. It is understood that Shubman Gill injured his toe, ruling him out for the remainder of the series, and leaving the opener slot vacant for Sanju to return.
