The toll gate on the Kasaragod–Talapadi stretch began operations last Monday under heavy police protection.
Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways noted that the new system has been introduced in 10 locations and will be extended nationwide within a year.
The procedures to collect the toll will be initiated once the proposal receives the Cabinet nod.
The NHAI gave the clarrification as a reply to an RTI query posed by KPCC secretary Shaju Kodankathu.
The government may bring in either a GPS-based system or an automated number plate method for toll collection.
