The idea of starting a cafe was lingering in the minds of actor-entrepreneur Nirmal Jaic and costume designer Sheeba Manishankar for a while. But how could the café stand out in the crowd? And this question planted beans of Kopi Luwak in them and Kafe Kopi Luwak started brewing in style.
Kopi Luwak, also known as Civet coffee, is from Indonesia, and the coffee beans are processed in a unique way which is the twist in the tale. The beans are collected and processed from the poop of civet cats. These cats eat coffee cherries and the enzymes in the civet's stomach give an ethereal flavour to the beans, which are not digested. This natural process makes Kofi Luwak one of the best coffees in the world. Indonesia has a thriving Kopi Luwak industry.
Kafe Kopi Luwak also boasts of some fancy interiors – quite different from the usual mundane style. The owners were particular to draft in vibrancy and distinctiveness to the whole setting. The seats were designed by Wayanad tribals after drawing inspiration from the traditional coracle boats.
When it comes to the food on offer, the cafe is in a different league. Italian dishes with Kopi Luwak have made the cafe popular among Kochiites. Initially, the owners were quite skeptical about the demand for Kopi Luwak, which costs around Rs 1,600 per cup. But it was an instant hit as many liked its taste and were regulars at the cafe. Many film actors also visit the cafe quite frequently.
