Like Mumtaz is to Shah Jahan, chutney is to idli, Kerala's beef porotta love story is an epic that unites the whole state regardless of religious and caste divisions. Even as the trailer of the film 'Kerala Story 2' has been trolled on social media for its 'force-feeding beef' scene, Malayalis are busy expressing their love for their most popular food combo by sharing recipes, making memes, and more. Most recently, the Kerala Tourism social media page also joined the trend by posting its own take on the controversy. 'No beef with anyone. That's our recipe for happiness,' says the post on the page, which shows a foreigner sharing a cup of tea and banter with a Kerala resident.
Will they get it?
While the post is getting a lot of appreciation from netizens, with comments like 'Nicely cooked,' many wonder whether the target audience or hate mongers will ever understand the meaning of the line. The usage 'No beef with anyone' means 'No disputes or conflicts with anyone.' However, extremist voices that aren't well-versed in English can easily interpret the Kerala Tourism post as an assurance for fear-induced compliance, say netizens. 'Poor bakths won't understand the meaning of beef in this copy,' goes a comment on the Kerala Tourism post, under which people are helping those confused to gauge the meaning of the 'no beef' line. There are also those who have given the line a creative twist, saying, 'No beef with anyone, but Mr Porotta.'
The OG porotta-beef spots
On various social media posts trolling, criticising, and explaining the Kerala Story 2 beef scene and its propaganda, many are inquiring about the OG beef-porotta spots in the state. There are many suggestions from across the state, from hyperlocal teashops to Ayyappand Chettan's kada, the Palakkad eatery featured in the Pranav Mohanlal-Kalynai Priyadarshan starrer Hridayam.
Meanwhile, many are also suggesting 'thattukada porotta' as the best option, thanks to its flaky layers and affordable rates. The Kerala Tourism website suggests numerous credible spots that serve 'Beef Kurumulakittathu' or 'Beef pepper roast' across various districts of the state, here. Tourists visiting Kerala can pick their destination, searching by 'District,' 'Taluk' or 'Local Body' to get their suggestions from this website. In all these spots, porotta will also be generally available.
