Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Government increased the fee for conducting school sports meets and related activities, which is collected from students in Classes 9 to 12. The new fee for Class 9 and 10 students is Rs 15 in place of Rs 10, and for higher secondary students, Rs 75 instead of the earlier Rs 50. This amount is collected along with the special fees at the beginning of every academic year.

The government gave sanction for the fee hike based on a report by the Director of General Education, which said that the athletics fund collected at present was insufficient.

However, it is pointed out that, apart from this official fee, students are being made to pay unofficial funds in various sub-districts during school athletic meets. According to students, this fund collection drive is carried out based on instructions from authorities at the education sub-district offices.
