Mathi-pachakaya curry

The delicious sardine curry with raw plantains is a unique dish that is served at the households in north Malabar. This dish, which is prepared with fresh sardines and locally produced raw plantains, tastes best with piping hot rice. Try out this simple recipe for lunch.

Ingredients
6 sardines
3 big raw plantains
Coconut oil as required
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tbsp chilli powder
Turmeric powder as required
Half of a coconut
8 cloves garlic
1 tsp cumin

Preparation
Clean the sardines and cook it with salt and turmeric powder as required
De-bone the sardines before adding it into the curry
Cut the raw plantains into round shaped pieces 
Cook the plantains with salt and turmeric powder 
Enough water should be added to soak the plantains 
When the plantain begins to cook add the chilli powder
Crush the grated coconut, garlic and cumin well
Add these into the cooked plantain
Drizzle a bit of coconut oil too
Into it add the cooked and de-boned sardines
Mix well without breaking the fish apart
Prepare a tempering by roasting mustard seeds and curry leaves in coconut oil
Add this tempering into the sardines-raw plantain curry
Add black pepper is you want it spicier.
