Thattukada style parippu vada

Parippu vada or dal fritters are one of the classic tea time snacks of Kerala. Check out this easy recipe of homemade parippuvada that tastes exactly like the ones that are sold at a 'thattukada' or wayside tea shops.

Ingredients
1 cup Bengal gram
½ cup shallots
3 pieces ginger
2 bunches curry leaves
3 green chillies
2 cloves garlic
3 dried chillies
1 tsp salt
½ tsp asafetida

Preparation
Soak the Bengal gram for at least 3-4 hours
Drain by transferring it into a sieve
Save 2 table spoons Bengal gram for later
Grind the rest of the soaked Bengal gram in a mixer jar without adding water
Transfer this into a bowl and keep it aside
Crush the shallots, ginger, curry leaves, green chillies, garlic and dried chillies together
Into the ground Bengal gram add the 2 tablespoons Bengal gram that was saved earlier and the crushed spice mix as well
Now add salt and asafetida
Mix well using your hands
Make small balls from this and press them gently on your palms in the shape of dal fritters
Deep fry in hot oil until the parippu vada turns crispy and brown.
