Kerala-style spicy fish curry

'Kari' or catfish is a local variety that is usually found in backwaters or in ponds in the countryside. This fleshy fish could be fried or cooked in spicy masala which tastes amazing with rice. Here is a recipe of Kerala-style kari fish curry.

Ingredients
5 big cat fishes
3 tbsp chilli powder
1 tbsp coriander powder
1 tsp turmeric powder
2 onions
15 shallots
1 tomato
2 green chillies
1 piece ginger
1 bulb garlic
2 bulbs tamarind
2 sprigs curry leaves
Coconut oil as required
Salt as required

Preparation
Soak the fishes in tamarind water for half an hour and scrub well using a scrubber to remove the scales
Do not peel off the skin of the fishes
Marinate the cleaned fishes with chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder and salt
Heat coconut oil in an earthen chatty 
Sauté onion, shallots, tomato, green chillies and crushed ginger and garlic
Add curry leaves as well
Add water and tamarind 
When the gravy boils add the marinated fishes
Boil until the fishes are cooked well.
