Thiruvananthapuram: Amid speculations that Mohanlal may contest from the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha seat as a BJP candidate in the 2019 elections, senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala on Wednesday said that he does not believe that the popular actor would commit such a blunder.

“I do not believe that Mohanlal would commit such a blunder,” the Leader of the Opposition in Kerala Assembly said.

“Mohanlal is a very popular actor who is loved by one and all. It is hard to believe that he would take such a foolish decision,” Chennithala said while taking part in a programme organized by the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club to discuss the post flood scenario in the state.

When reporters asked him whether everyone who joins the BJP was a fool, Chennithala replied that they could interpret his statement as they wished.

Mohanlal had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently to discuss the activities of Viswasanthi Foundation, constituted in memory of his parents. Reports suggesting that Mohanlal would contest from Thiruvananthapuram came out soon after the meeting.

However, people close to Mohanlal had refuted these reports. The actor is now in Thiruvananthapuram as part of the shooting of the film ‘Lucifer’ directed by Prithviraj.

After he met Modi, Mohanlal had posted on social media that the prime minister had extended all support to build a new Kerala. Modi also had tweeted praising the actor, sparking a discussion on his entry to politics as a BJP candidate.
