The cases pertaining to the deaths due to consumption of spurious liquor was transferred to the CB- CID by DGP C Sylendra Babu following instructions from Chief Minister M K Stalin
Apparently, the state government failed to prohibit the sale and consumption of illicit or spurious liquor, the commission said in a statement.
The incident occurred at Ekkiyarkuppam at Marakanam near Villupuram on Saturday night.
Manichan was released from Nettukaltheri open jail after the Supreme Court ordered the Kerala government to release him without collecting Rs 30.45 lakh fine.
Manichan who was an accused in the Kalluvathukkal hooch tragedy and lodged in the Central Jail was transferred to the open jail as part of character correction.
The Kollam sessions court had said that Manichan still has to pay a fine of Rs 30.45 lakh in order to be released from jail.
Thirty-one lives were lost and over 500 were hospitalised following the tragedy that rocked the state on October 21, 2000.
Viscera samples of 35 other people, who are suspected to have died after consuming spurious liquor, have been sent for examination to confirm the cause of death.
The excise department has confirmed that the victims had not consumed alcohol. The exact reason would be known only after chemical test results are available.
So far, the maximum 83 deaths have taken place in Tarn Taran district, followed by 14 in Batala and 13 in Amritsar. The tragedy has been unfolding since Wednesday evening in the three districts.
