K Surendran has urged the Kerala government to reduce fuel tax further by Rs 10.
Union Finance Minister Niramala Sitharaman said the government has decided to slash excise duty on fuel.
Pinarayi said that a substantial chunk of the increase was made up of cesses and surcharges. These have now risen to 15% of the Centre's total tax receipts, the CM said.
Kerala's Finance Minister K N Balagopal has termed the cesses and additional duties "unconstitutional".
In the last 12 days, price of petrol has increased by Rs 10.89 and diesel by Rs 10.25.
In the last 11 days, price of petrol has increased by Rs 10.02 and diesel by Rs 9.41.
In the last 10 days, price of petrol has increased by Rs 8.71 and diesel by Rs 8.42 respectively.
A litre of petrol costs 88 paisa more while diesel price rose 84 paisa/litre on Wednesday.
In Kerala, petrol price rose 87 paise and diesel price rose 74 paise per litre. The petrol and diesel now cost Rs 109.51 and Rs 96.48 per litre respectively in Kochi, Kerala's economic hub.
India is 85 per cent dependent on imports for meeting its oil needs and so retail rates adjust accordingly to the global movement.
