Dehradun: Recollecting the harrowing experience of being struck by the avalanche that lashed Uttarakhand, Border Roads Organisation (BRO) worker Jagbir Singh said he saw he was surrounded by an endless expanse of white when he came to his senses. He was next to a dead co-worker and his body stuck
The total number of people recovered from the avalanche has reached 53, including the seven workers who were found dead.
The avalanche, which occurred early morning at the 14th milestone on Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, had trapped 25-30 tourists, according to defence sources.
Savita Kanswal had set a national record by climbing Mount Everest and Mount Makalu within a span of 15 days earlier this year.
The National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police and a team of mountaineers have launched rescue operations.
