The sports ministry approved La Liga's plans on Thursday for clubs to test their players for the coronavirus before they return to training as the league looks to restart the season in June after it was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
La Liga had agreed to contribute 3.3 million euros per season for the next three seasons to an emergency fund to help non-professional players.
The club said the move followed negotiations between the team captains -- Sergio Ramos for the senior soccer side -- and club directors. It said the decision would save having to cut the wages of other employees.
The health minister added that La Liga's plans to provide daily COVID-19 tests for players require government approval.
He had suffered a heart attack during a training session last year and has not played any competitive football since April, 2019.
The report added that Messi is angry about leaked media reports that appeared to make him seem responsible for events at the club, such as the January sacking of coach Ernesto Valverde, and that he is frustrated about the squad's lack of quality.
