Athirappilly: The much famed waterfalls here has seen a significant increase in the number of tourists, though heavy rain has been lashing the state. Visitors are thronging to enjoy the pristine beauty of the waterfalls which has gathered volume due to the rains.

On Monday, a record number of tourists poured into Athirappilly from 7 in the morning to even after 5 pm. Queue of stranded vehicles reached 5 kilometres, and small vehicles were seen parked on both sides of Plantation Valley – Athirappilly road. Many tourists, including children and old people, were stuck inside the vehicles without food due to heavy traffic.

Those who did not find parking spots had to park their vehicles kilometres away from the waterfall and walked. Amidst this heavy flow of vehicles and people, two vehicles collided. Travellers were injured in another accident involving two wheelers. It is reported that there were no enough police personnel to control the heavy traffic in the area. There are also grievances against the forest department citing that the officials failed to offer their services despite the huge flow of tourists.
