New Delhi: The National Credit Framework has come out with a new criterion: a student with knowledge of Indian knowledge systems like the Puranas and Vedas can get college credits through them. The National Credit Framework, which outlines the criteria for acquiring credits in school, college, and vocational education, was published the other day.

The new guidelines have been finalised under the aegis of agencies like the UGC, AICTE, the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCERT, and the Central School Education Department.

The framework clarifies how many credits have to be acquired to qualify from Class 5 to PhD and how to undergo the courses to do so.

For securing a credit, it is stipulated that you study for 30 hours. The study in various modes can be converted into credits. Credits can be secured by attending classes, doing lab work, and participating in arts and sports activities. The Indian Knowledge System has been included in addition to these as a separate section. The draught guidelines published in October did not contain this.

Another suggestion is to consider parallel systems like homeschooling as an official school education system.

It is also recommended to extend the multiple entry/exit system, being implemented in the higher education sector, to the school education system as well. It is explained that such a system will benefit those who wish to undergo vocational study instead of school study.

Currently, there is no official policy in the country with regard to homeschooling. The NCF says that there is a need to recognise homeschooling, online study, and parallel education.
