Design bestows uniqueness to lottery seller's 'budget' home

This beautiful house at Chathannoor in Kollam, Kerala has unique designs and patterns that instantly grab the attention. The owner of the house, Naveen Kumar and his wife sell lottery tickets for a living. The couple has a son. “We owned a small 5 cents plot in Chathannoor. Though we sell ‘luck’, we were never fortunate in our lives. We wished to construct a quaint house with just one bedroom on this small plot. Moreover, we wanted to build the house on a smaller budget as well. The Ego Design Studio, based in Thiruvananthapuram, has designed the perfect house that suited our budget and the unique layout of the plot as well,” says the owner.

The house is designed by leaving provisions for making extensions in the future. So, house sports a flat roof which grants a box style structure to the elevation. Exposed interlocking bricks found from near the house are used as designer highlights on the exterior walls.

The structure has been built by retaining the natural slopes of the plot. So, the house is designed in two levels making it look like a two storied one.

The elevation has been designed considering the changes that may happen in the nearby plots. Walls have been built on the side where buildings may be built in the future, to ensure privacy. Meanwhile, the sit-out and the terrace are arranged where the shades of the trees fall.

This quaint yet stylish house, designed in 950 sq ft, has living and dining areas, courtyard, kitchen with work area, common bathroom, one bedroom and an open terrace. The dining – kitchen – courtyard is arranged in the open style. This makes the interiors look extremely vast.

The interiors do not feature any brighter colours; instead they exude the mesmerizing charm of the lighter shades of hues. The inner walls don the classy combination of white and grey. The jail work done with a kind of terracotta bricks called the porotherm acts as a stylish designer element and a breathing space as well. A stitching space has been arranged for Naveen’s wife near the courtyard which receives lots of natural sun light.

As there is only one bedroom in the house, it is spacious and elaborately decorated. A separate space has been built like a shorter wall where a mini study-cum-play area is arranged.

As the parapet is built at a height, it would be easier to install a truss roof here if required in the future. This would allow the family to have an additional 950 sq ft area in the upper storey. This smart planning, with a vision for the future, is the highlight of this amazing house.

“The construction of our dream home named ‘Krishnakripa’ was completed on a minimal budget of just Rs 12 lakh. This includes the expenses for building the structure and for furnishing as well. We believe that the lady luck has blessed us in the form of this house as we spent amazing moments here,” says Naveen.
