Alcoholic son kills mother, buries body on house premises

Kollam: In a shocking incident, an elderly woman was killed and buried on the premises of her house by her younger son. Savithri Amma had been missing since September 5, following which her daughter filed a complaint with the Kollam East Police. An investigation led the police to recover the one-month-old body. Younger son Sunil, a man with criminal background, was subsequently arrested.

Apart from Sunil, Savithri Amma has another son and a daughter, both of whom never visited her fearing their brother. Neighbours said Sunil was an alcoholic who used to torture his mother. “He kicked on Savithri Amma’s stomach and she cried out aloud. We could not bear hearing her screams. Still, she never left him,” said a neighbour.

Sunil was earlier arrested for killing another man during a dispute while drinking. “Savithri Amma had secured bail for him. Even though she had two other children, Savithri Amma loved Sunil the most,” added the neighbour.

While Savithri Amma’s daughter is a teacher, her elder son is a bank officer. “The elderly woman chose to live with Sunil despite the torture. Sunil displayed animal instincts after drinking. He used to harass Savithri Amma for her pension money. Apart from the murder case, Sunil was facing several charges related to drugs,” said another neighbour.

Meanwhile, Sunil’s sister said their mother was killed over money. “Sunil tortured mother demanding the title deed of her house. He wanted an amount of Rs 2 lakh,” she said.

According to the police, a friend named Kuttan had helped Sunil in killing Savithri Amma.

Savithri Amma’s body would be handed over to relatives after an autopsy, said the police.
