Thiruvananthapuram: The Congress leadership in Kerala seemed to have put the party restructuring move on hold with Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president K Sudhakaran asking all workers to focus on the membership distribution campaign.

Sudhakaran did not announce that the restructuring process had been stopped, but told the leadership meeting that it had been postponed.

Sudhakaran, however, said in a media statement after the leadership meeting that the restructuring process was in its last stage and the office-bearers would be announced soon.

Appointment of office-bearers

The usual practice of nominating office-bearers seemed unlikely with the party moving towards organisational elections.

With the party heading towards organisational elections after the membership campaign, the usual nomination process to select office-bearers might face opposition.

Different groups in Congress have been opposed to restructuring the party. Additionally, the All-India Congress Committee (AICC), too, might not approve the move.

Sudhakaran's address at the KPCC's leadership meeting gave rise to the feeling that the efficiency in the campaign would also be considered while deciding the office-bearers.

Other tasks

The online meeting decided on various programmes to achieve its target of 50 lakh Congress members. District Congress Committee meetings would be convened in all districts on Thursday, followed by the meetings of block committees and constituency committees on March 18 and 20, respectively.

Workers would be provided training on digital membership campaign from March 18 to 21, after dividing the State into four regions.

A demand was raised at the KPCC leadership meeting to hold the membership campaign offline too. The KPCC president would seek the high command's permission for holding the offline campaign, along with the digital mode.

Each booth would target to add 200 members. The party would observe March 25 to 31 as membership week. All leaders —  from the booth level to the State level — would distribute memberships on March 27.

The leadership meeting also decided to set up control rooms in all districts. Party working president T Siddique would head the control room at the Congress headquarters.
