Thousands of women devotees have gathered in Thiruvananthapuram for the annual Attukal Pongala festival, a significant ritual performed exclusively by women that commemorates hospitality towards the divine heroine Kannagi and is recognized as one of the world's largest women-only gatherings.
In a rare coincidence, the iconic Attukal pongala and the lunar eclipse fall on the same day this year.
5,855 police personnel would be deployed across four zones of the city.
Pongala Day will be a local holiday in Thiruvananthapuram, with all educational institutions and government and semi-government offices in the district closed.
