Japan is the fifth nation to pull off a fiendishly tricky 'soft landing' after the United States, the Soviet Union, China and India.
The rocket body has reentered the Earth's atmosphere 124 days after it was launched.
Modi's directions came during a briefing by ISRO Chairman S Somanath on the progress of the Gaganyaan mission, which is to have its first demonstration flight of the crew escape system on October 21.
"Aditya-L1, destined for the Sun-Earth L1 point, takes a selfie and images of the Earth and the Moon," the Bengaluru-headquartered national space agency said on 'X'.
If 'Pragyan' doesn't wake up at next lunar sunrise on September 22, it will 'forever remain India's lunar ambassador'.

It also said the instrument also detected aluminium, calcium, iron, chromium, titanium, manganese, silicon and oxygen, as expected.
ISRO said that the Pragyan rover followed commands to retrace its path on encountering a crater on the lunar surface.

On its official X handle, ISRO said the "rover ramped down."
