Kerala has banned bottom trawling from June 10 to July 31 along its coastline to conserve fish, protect traditional fishermen, and promote sustainable marine resource management.
Heavy rainfall is forecast for Kerala until June 5, with a 52-day trawling ban commencing June 9 to protect marine resources during fish breeding season.
The ban is aimed at conserving marine biodiversity during the breeding season.
Implemented to protect fish stocks during the monsoon breeding season, the ban was enforced from June 9.
Popular varieties such as sardine, mackerel (ayala), anchovy (netholi) and trevally (vatta) have disappeared from the coast of Kerala.
Fisheries control rooms will operate 24 hours a day in coastal districts.
The ban was not applied to smaller inboard and traditional boats.
Most of the boats that had been at sea for 10–15 days returned to shore due to the trawling ban.
A government notification in this regard will be released soon.
The ban, which is imposed every year during the monsoon season to ensure the prosperity of the marine stock, prohibits fishing by trawling off the Kerala coast during the period.
