Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on July 21, 2025, creating a constitutional vacancy.
As per the notification, August 21 is the last date for filing nominations.
Until that election is concluded, the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha steps in to discharge the Vice President's parliamentary duties, including presiding over proceedings in the Upper House.
Dhankar cited health reasons in his resignation letter, which was made public shortly after.
Congress thinks there were far deeper reasons for quitting.
In such a vacancy, the role is carried out by the deputy chairperson or another Rajya Sabha member designated by the President.
He has submitted his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu, stating that he is stepping down with immediate effect.
