The Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) has started the admission process for lateral entry into vacant seats in Classes 9 and 11 of its schools for the academic year 2024–25. Interested students can submit applications online before October 31.

A selection test will be there. Those securing admission will be provided with free accommodation and food. However, certain categories of students need to pay a small fee. The applicants from the various reservation categories will be considered for the respective quota seats.

Class 9

The candidates who are bona fide residents and studying in Class 8 during the academic session 2023–24 in one of the government-recognized schools in the district where the Navodaya educational institution is located are eligible. Those who have passed Class 8 in the previous years won’t be considered. The date of birth of the candidate must be between May 1 and July 31 (both days inclusive). None will be extended a relaxation on the age limit. Nearly 110 vacancies are expected to arise in Kerala.

The selection test will be conducted on February 10, 2024 (Saturday). The examination, which has a two-and-a-half-hour duration, will be held on an objective-type model. It will have 100 questions, either in English or Hindi, covering topics from the subjects of mathematics, general science, English, and Hindi. The standard of questions will be that of Class 8. There will be no negative marks for wrong answers.

Under normal circumstances, the schools to which the students are seeking admission will be the examination centers. The merit list will be prepared on the basis of marks obtained in three subjects: mathematics, science, and one of the two languages in which the candidate has scored more marks.

Class 11

The candidates who are bona fide residents and studying in Class 10 during the academic session 2023–24 in one of the government-recognized schools in the district where the educational institution is located are eligible. Those who have passed Class 10 in the previous years won’t be considered. The date of birth of the candidate must be between June 1st, 2007 and July 31st, 2009 (both days inclusive). None will be extended a relaxation on the age limit.

All 14 NVS schools in Kerala have vacancies in the science group. However, only 12 of them have vacancies in the commerce stream and only one in the humanities. The students can either apply to a single group or both streams for Class 11.

The selection test will be held at 11 am on February 10, 2024 (Saturday). Each candidate will have to appear at the exam center indicated in their hall ticket. The questions will be asked only in English and Hindi and not in any other language. The test will be of an objective type and have five sections: mental ability, English, Science, Social Science, and Mathematics. Each section carries 20 marks. In all, there will be 100 questions for 100 marks.

For each question, there will be four options. The candidate is required to select the correct answer and darken the corresponding circle of the chosen answer. There are no negative marks for wrong answers.

A candidate has to score the minimum qualifying mark of six out of the total 20 marks in each subject. The merit list will be prepared on the basis of marks obtained in different subjects. It is given in the prospectus how the marks are calculated, i.e., the marks for which all subjects will be considered for each group. A candidate needs to achieve the minimum prescribed marks out of the total marks.

The prospectus can be downloaded from the website, www.navodaya.gov.in. It contains more details, such as the syllabus and the application method. Free assistance will be provided at all Navodaya schools for the submission of the applications.
