Kottayam: The Baselius College in Kottayam has modified the academic hours from June 3, in order to enable students to pursue employment and job-oriented courses along with the regular classes.

“The new time-table will provide sufficient time for students to engage in part-time jobs after their class hours,” said Prof Biju Thomas, principal of the college.

According to the new time-table, classes will start at 8.30 am and conclude by 1.45 pm. During the rest of the day, students can take up part-time employment. Those who are not interested in working can join an employment-oriented skill development course, online programme or carry out other academic activities.

The four-year graduate degree courses being introduced this year have a syllabus that lays stress on developing the skills required to earn employment. “Under the new curriculum, students having an excellent academic record can earn a degree in two-and-a-half years,” said vice-principal Prof Dr P Jyothimol and bursar Dr Annie Cherian.

A survey was conducted among the students and their parents before the time-table was changed, the college authorities said.
