Father jailed for killing mother: Boy’s request for phone startles cop

Mala: A cop was startled to hear the request of a nine-year-old boy. He wanted to get back the phone of his father, who had been jailed for killing his mother.

The boy used to attend online classes on this phone. The very next day, the police officers reached his home with a new phone, giving him a glimmer of hope.

The boy is from Puthenchira near Mala of Thrissur district. His father had been arrested for killing his mother last month and the phone was seized by the police.

While cop M G Shali was accompanying the boy to Thrissur to get the medical certificates in connection with the death, the boy asked her if the phone could be given back to him. The child had thought that a schoolteacher was accompanying him.

Only when Shali turned up at his house in police uniform on Wednesday, that the boy realised that she was a cop. SHO V Sajin Shashi's friend Dr K P Varghese had bought the phone after hearing of the boy's plight.

The police team also urged him to study well and join the police force.

The boy and his sister are currently living with their maternal grandparents at a rented house. The money earned by the grandparents through occasional daily-wage work is the only means of livelihood for the family.
